Amerigroup Foundation Provides New York Disaster Relief
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Thursday, November 15, 2012) – The Amerigroup Foundation is providing essential items including winter coats, food and cleaning supplies to residents affected by Hurricane Sandy as part of a multifaceted relief effort.
Shortly after the storm, a team of employees from the Company’s Virginia Beach headquarters traveled to Staten Island, N.Y. and coordinated on the ground efforts with local New York employees from HealthPlus, an Amerigroup Company. The team distributed hats, blankets, gloves and food in the affected areas to employees and residents displaced by the storm. After further assessing the damage, Amerigroup deployed additional employees from Virginia trained in shelter administration, CPR and disaster relief efforts to continue cleanup and relief efforts and to assemble and donate clean up kits for New York residents.
“We appreciate the assistance of the Amerigroup Foundation in responding to the needs of our employees, our members and the larger New York community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy,” said Robert Wychulis, chief executive officer of HealthPlus Amerigroup. “Many families throughout the area still have numerous needs and, working with the Foundation, we plan to do all we can to help in the weeks ahead.”
Additionally, Amerigroup employees collected nearly 500 coats in partnership with New York Cares, New York City’s leading volunteer organization. The coats, along with hats and gloves, were distributed in a special event hosted by New York Cares on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
